First course of book production has been released
Today, my first course of book production has been released. I’m building video coursework for using InDesign to produce books on Udemy starting with basic typography.
Actually we start with the very beginning, where you must choose:
- Book size
- Margins
- Column width
- And more
This first course of book production lays a solid foundation
This is the largest lack in most self-published books today. Much of it is not the fault of the author or designer—it’s the tools they are using. Many of the necessities are not possible in a word processor. Regardless, like everyone else, if you’re not a graphic designer/typographer you’ve almost certainly never heard about these necessary skills.
InDesign is the best software application for producing excellent typography. It is the reason why professional books done by the traditional publishers look so much better, in many cases.
But the sad thing is that even graphic designers are not taught the truth about typography. Most designers think that typography is the fonts you pick. That is only a very small part of it. It’s mostly about helping readers enjoy reading your book.
Typography is the art of communicating clearly and easily with type
This is the skill of making your book easily accessible and comfortable to read. This is what this first course begins to teach you. It is a life-long study and you’ll never exhaust the possibilities or the beauty of good type designed with excellence.
