Book Publishing With InDesign CC: Spiral-bound
Even after over forty-five years, there’s still that little thrill when you see a finished book for the first time. It’s too bad that Amazon won’t carry them. But, they are the best choice for the classroom or self-study.
The spiral-bound workbook
I had to cut out the Christian marketing section to get the page count below the 470 page maximum for spiral-bound. The only thing I really miss are the color graphics. To get that (and the rest of the pages) you need the downloadable PDF. Here you can get the single-page version—plus an ePUB Reflow. Or you can get a PDF in reader’s spreads, which matches the print version (plus color graphics).
This is all practical stuff
- How do I get this done?
- What do I need to do it?
- What workflow will make for efficient production?
- How can I layout my print book so that ebooks conversions are as easy as possible?
This book is the result of 45 years working with publishers as an illustrator, graphic designer, typographer, art director, and teacher/curriculum designer for commercial printing—followed by digital publishing in 1996. I taught these materials at the second year, community college level, for eighteen years. This is the latest edition of a long growth of editions since my first, Publishing With InDesign, in 2000 [copyrighted 2001]. That book covered versions one and 1.5 of InDesign.
InDesign is an amazing page layout tool
Nothing else even comes close [with the possible exception of QuarkXPress]. Coming from the world of paste-up and mechanical layouts with drafting tools, you have no idea how much better InDesign is.
Using the new 21st century paradigm of self-publishing
One of the wonderful things about the new publishing paradigm is the control we get as artists, authors, designers, and publishers over the entire package. A modern book is released in multiple sizes, versions, and formats. The content and design remain fluid as we shape the book while we learn and grow.
We can easily adjust content, layout, and presentation of our books after they are released in response to emails, beta readers, FaceBook friends, tweets, comments on our blog posts, pluses on our Google+ post comments, and the whole host of online social networking.
Welcome to the new self-publishing of the 21st century!
