What desktop publishing did to graphic designers, self-publishing is doing to authors — 2 Comments

  1. The last shift interests me the most. With the layout-once, publish-many-ways features of InDesign-CC 2014, I’m hoping InDesign becomes the tool of choice for self-publishing authors. With one app, authors could create an excellent print book, an excellent fixed layout epub (for tablets) and an excellent reflowable epub (for smartphones).

    I can only hope that:

    1. Adobe considers creating a $10 writer’s CC package like they now have for photographers.

    2. Amazon ‘gets with it’ and helps Adobe add high-quality Mobi and KF8 export features to InDesign. Amazon does know how to convert reflowable epub to their Kindle formats. But there needs to be a way to create the KF8 equivalent of fixed format within InDesign. Fixed format is great for children’s books, cookbooks, and textbooks.

  2. I agree, Michael. But for me the exciting thing is the new ADE with ePUB3 support for FXL and reflowable. That should mean Nook and Kobo will get an update, along with CBD’s ereader and others. That should push amazon off center a little. 🙂

Whatcha thinkin'?
